Bengaluru: Suicide bid by nursing lecturer
Bengaluru: A 40-year-old nursing faculty with Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI) attempted suicide at the college premises allegedly due to harassment from one of her seniors. The incident occurred on November 16, and Mamata Veerabhadrappa, left a suicide note accusing harassment from her senior and attempted to hang herself.
Some nursing students happened to hear the sound of the chair falling and rushed to the chamber to check. They rescued and shifted her to the hospital. She had almost hanged herself with a rope tied to the ceiling fan when the students saved her. Mamata is currently in intensive care unit and said to be out of danger.
In her suicide note, Mamata has accused assistant professor Hemavathi of harassing and humiliating her in front of colleagues and students. “She abuses me often before students and others faculties. Moreover, she defames my character and accuses me of unethical activities,” read the one page death note written in Kannada, which was addressed to the director of the Institute. Mamata had also recorded a two-minute video of herself with her mobile phone, explaining how Hemavathi used to torture her.
Both Mamata and Hemavathi are lecturers in the nursing college at BMCRI and they have not been in good terms for long and used to quarrel over petty issues. Mamata took the drastic step of attempting suicide. We have to counsel both of them. Mamata was here on deputation, said a source from the hospital.
“Today, we visited Mamata and she made a written statement saying she cannot talk much as her throat was paining. She also wrote that after getting discharged from the hospital, she will come and explain everything,” the police stated.
