Chennai: Over 100 sovereigns stolen in break-ins

At least six houses burgled in separate incidents.

Chennai: More than 100 sovereigns of gold jewellery and valuables have been stolen in a spate of burglaries reported in the city since Friday. Police sources said that at least six houses were broke into in separate incidents in Royapuram, Triplicane and Foreshore Estate areas.

In Royapuram, around 90 sovereigns of gold and cash were allegedly stolen from the house of a railway employee here. Munusamy (43), a railway staffer lived with his wife, Kalavathi (40), a schoolteacher and their daughter, a college student. On Friday, Kalavathi was away at school while her daughter was at college. Munusamy who came home around noon noticed the front door of the house broke open. He rushed inside to find burglar(s) to have decamped with jewellery and cash from his cupboard. Police rushed to the scene on information and conducted enquires.

In Triplicane, house of a staffer at the local Aavin booth was robbed, police said. At least 19 sovereign of gold jewellery and Rs 1 lakh were stolen from the house of Sarangapani-Vijaya couple on Mallan Ponnappan Street here, police said. While the man was away at work, the woman left home around 11 am and returned in the evening to find the house broke into, police sources said.

A series of break-ins was reported in Foreshore estate area on Saturday wherein burglar(s) broke into three houses and fled with five mobile phones, cash and around 10 sovereigns of gold jewellery.
