The arrested, Jagadeesh (54), was from Gujarat and a resident of Down Bazar Road in Yelahanka.

Bengaluru: A man who was cheating jewellery shop owners of a particular community after convincing them that he runs a trust which helps poor children of the community in pursuing education was arrested by the City Market police.

The arrested, Jagadeesh (54), was from Gujarat and a resident of Down Bazar Road in Yelahanka. The accused used to approach jewellery shop owners hailing from Gujarat and Rajasthan and introduce himself as the founder of ‘Samvedana’ Trust which helps children pursue their education.

The accused had collected huge amounts as donation from jewellery shop owners. On June 27, the accused went to Mangaldeep Jain jewellery shop in Chickpet and told the shop owner Praveen that he wanted to purchase around 10 gold chains which he was planning to gift to people who have been continuously donating to the trust and thus asked for six samples of gold chains. Praveen, who believed Jagadeesh as he has on many occasions donated money to the trust, gave away three gold chains weighing 58 gm.

However, Jagadeesh came back to the shop and requested for six more gold chains, but Praveen refused to entertain him and told him that he should pay first and get the chains. Jagadish then wrote a cheque of Rs 1 lakh and handed it over to Praveen and took the chains.

The next day, Praveen went to the bank and deposited the check only to realise the next day that the cheque had bounced. Praveen made numerous calls to Jagadeesh’s phone number, but couldn’t reach him and later lodged a complaint at the City Market police station on July 15. The police who took up the investigation arrested Jagadish.

The police have recovered from him nine gold chains worth Rs 9.5 lakh. The police further said that the accused in the name of his trust had collected 11 gold chains from jewellery shops in Upparpet police station limits.
