Kerala: Youth attempts to slit girl's throat

The woman sustained deep cuts on her neck, left shoulder and left thigh and immediately fell on the road while bleeding profoundly.

Kochi: A 29-year-old youth on Monday allegedly tried to slit throat of a woman, a native of Nellimattom near Kothamangalam, after she rejected his marriage proposal. The accused Shyam Ravi, a resident of Malayinkeezhu near Kothamangalam, attacked the 27-year-old woman while she was on her way to a private health laboratory at the Deshabhimani-Karukapilly stretch near Kaloor. “The incident happened at 6.45 am. The victim was working at the laboratory on a contract basis and took an auto to reach her workplace. The accused was following her in his two-wheeler and attacked her as soon as she alighted from the auto and started walking.

The woman sustained deep cuts on her neck, left shoulder and left thigh and immediately fell on the road while bleeding profoundly. Hearing her screaming, local residents rushed to the spot even as the accused fled in his motor cycle. “The victim was rushed to a near-by hospital. Her condition was critical and she was subjected to an emergency surgery. By evening her condition, however, became stable,” police said.

The accused, a painter by profession, meanwhile, rode all the way to the Muvattupuzha bus stand and tried to catch a long-haul bus from the stand. On an alert, the cops from Kothamangalam arrested him and handed over to the Central Police. Preliminary investigations revealed that the accused made acquaintance with the victim a few years ago. The woman, however, turned down a proposal by Shyam, which provoked him to carry out the attack, police said. “We’ve taken a case against him with charges under section 341 (wrongful restraint) and section 307 (Attempt to murder). He was later produced before a court which remanded him to judicial custody,” the police said.
