Hyderabad: Most mishaps on Monday

156 killed in Monday accidents so far in 2017, says city police statistics.

Hyderabad: Monday seems to be a dangerous day for Hyderabadi motorists. As per traffic police records Mondays recorded the maximum number road accidents this year till June with around 156 vehicles suffering fatal and non-fatal accidents. All other days recorded lesser numbers of accidents. Hyderabad traffic police says Wednesdays saw the least number of accidents. Only 113 accidents were reported on Wednesdays in the twin cities.

Police records show that traffic violations like signal jumping, wrong side driving and speeding increased during Mondays and decreased during Wednesdays. “Accidents are directly proportionate to traffic violations as violations like signal jumping and speeding cause many mishaps,” said a senior traffic police official. While experts are yet to come up with a scientific explanation on why Mondays see so many accidents some of them connect the mishap rate with the general mentality of people towards Monday.

“Aren’t Mondays generally miserable for adults? The joys of the preceding weekend have been forgotten and delights of the next one seem far off. That reflects on people's driving. This could be a reason why Mondays witness more mishaps,” said J. Dhamodhar, a road safety expert. Traffic police officials said that earlier Saturdays and Sundays witnessed a large number of accidents due to drunk driving. However, drunk driving checks have brought down the number of drunk motorists.

Traffic police data shows that 40 per cent of accidents involved two wheelers, the highest among all categories of vehicles, and 32 per cent of mishaps involved four wheelers. Autorickshaws were involved in nine per cent of accidents while RTC buses caused four per cent of the accidents.
