Bengaluru: Wife ends life over husband's alcoholism
Bengaluru: A 23-year-old woman committed suicide by hanging at her residence in Prabhakar Layout in Nagenahalli in Hebbal police station limits on Wednesday. The deceased, Poornima, was reportedly in depression and upset over her husband’s drinking habits and absenting from work.
According to the police, Poornima, a native of Balehonnur in Chikmagalur, had come to Bengaluru a year ago and was married to Amruth for eight months. Theirs was a love marriage and the couple had rented a house in Prabhakar Layout in Nagenahalli.
Amruth, who claimed to be a hotel management graduate, did not go for work and was an alcoholic. Poornima came to know about his wayward ways only after their wedding. As she was a diploma student in hotel management, she tried to make both ends meet by working at a company in Electronics City. But Amruth’s alcoholism grew worse and he began harassing her for money. She went into a depression, the police stated.
On Wednesday evening, the couple had a heated quarrel and Poornima locked herself up in the house. Later when Amruth returned and knocked the door, there was no response. He peeped through the window and found her hanging.
The police was informed by the neighbours, who rushed to the spot, broke open the door to find Poornima hanging from the ceiling fan using a veil. She was shifted to a nearby hospital where she was declared brought dead. Later the body was shifted to M.S. Ramaiah Hospital for post-mortem. Hebbal police have taken Amruth into custody. A case of abetment to suicide, dowry death, dowry harassment has been registered.
