Meerpet: Dowry abuse claims another life

A case of dowry harassment has been booked against Vincy's husband, B. John Victor, his mother and his sister.

Hyderabad: Alleged torture from her husband, his sister and her mother-in- law drove a 29-year-old woman from Meerpet, to commit suicide.

Vincy Gnana Sarojini hanged herself at her in-law’s house when the residents were not at home, said the police. A case of dowry harassment has been booked against Vincy’s husband, B. John Victor, his mother and his sister.

John Victor is Vincy’s paternal cousin. Her father said that his elder sister wanted her son to get married to his daughter Vincy, but instead tortured her very badly. “Since her marriage eight months ago, my child spoke to us only twice,” he said.

Vincy after her graduation got married to her paternal cousin John Victor in August 2017. As Victor was working in Chennai, the couple moved to Chennai and was residing with his sister Synthia Sireesha’s family. But from the time the couple moved to Chennai, Sireesha started harassing Vincy without any reason.

Vincy’s family members claimed that Sireesha had been torturing her for petty issues. However, fed up with the harassment, the couple shifted to a new place, away from Sireesha, fifteen days ago. But Sireesha continued to harass her over the phone. “She would call her brother and ask irrelevant questions and harass Vincy,” they said.

For a land registration, the couple had come to their residence at Meerpet three days ago. On Wednesday evening, Vincy’s father Kaisar received a call from Victor stating that Vincy had committed suicide. They immediately rushed to the city from Machilipatnam in AP.

Mr Kaisar said that his elder sister B. Sandhya Krupanandam, had wanted his daughter Vincy to get married to her son since a very long time. “We thought that it was out of her affection for my child. Vincy called her mother and spoke to her in detail about the torture she was being subjected to. That was only the second time that she had called us after her marriage and unfortunately it turned out to be the last,” he said.

“They demanded an additional Rs 1.5 lakh as dowry and we promised to pay it after a year of the marriage. But they started pressurising us for the money much before the committed date,” he said.
