Bengaluru: Two Congress workers, BJP man attack two cops
Bengaluru: Four people, including two Congress workers and BJP’s Ward Yuva Morcha vice-president who attacked two police constables for questioning them for gambling in the open on Sunday afternoon in Varthur, have been arrested by the police.
The accused have been identified as Sandeep (27), vice-president of BJP Ward Yuva Morcha Varthur, Kumar (30) and Murthy (21), both Congress workers, and Murali Mohan (30). All the accused are residents of Siddapura near Varthur.
On Sunday afternoon, Basappa Ganigera and Sharana Basappa, constables attached to the Whitefield police station, received calls from the public about a group of people indulging in gambling on the premises of Siddapura Government School.
Though the area falls under the Varthur police station limits, the constables rushed to the spot on a Cheetah bike. The moment they reached the school, around 10 men gheraoed the constables and questioned them for their visit. When the constables told them about gambling, five of the 10 people started attacking the constables. The attackers were under the influence of alcohol, the police said.
One of the constables managed to escape and informed the control room. Within minutes, Varthur police reached the spot, but by then many attackers had fled the spot. The arrest was made based on a video recorded by a youth.
While four accused have been arrested, a manhunt has been launched to nab one more accused. The police are waiting for the constable to recover and explain as to why they went to the spot when the area does not fall under their jurisdiction.
