Hyderabad: A carpenter who stole gold chains from children at marriages was arrested by the Meerpet police on Tuesday.
Police recovered 5.5 tolas of gold from V. Srinivasa Chary of Mahbubnagar.
In December last year, three incidents of theft of gold chains worn by children during marriages were reported at the Meerpet police station.
As part of the investigation, the police collected CCTV camera footage at the function halls and identified that one person was moving closely with the kids.
On further investigation, police identified the man as Srinivasa Chary, 50, a carpenter living at Karmanghat and native of Bjinepally in Mahbubnagar.
Chary had married off his daughter about six years ago and run into debts.
About three years ago, he migrated to the city but could not find a job and decided to steal, said Vanasthalipuram ACP C Gandhi Narayana.
He said Chary visited Vanga Sankaramma and Swagath Grand function halls when marriages were taking place and stole the chains.
Police recovered the gold chains from him, Mr Narayana said.
