KANNUR: The police on Friday took into custody four suspected SDPI workers for the murder of Shyamaprasad, 25, a member of the ABVP at Kommeri in Kannur on Friday. The BJP called for a hartal on Saturday in protest, but exempted vehicles from it. Protesting in the murder BJP announced a hartal in Kannur district on Saturday. However BJP also assured that the vehicles would be exempted from the hartal.
Shyamaprasad was attacked while riding a bike by the gang wearing masks who came in a car, according to police. The incident occurred near the Government goat farm at Kommery near Nedumpoyil. Shyamaprasad was the chief shikshak of RSS unit at 17th mile, Kannavam.
Though Shyamaprasad had an attempt to escape running to a nearby home, the assassins followed and hacked him down at the portico of the home, said eyewitnesses. When few persons came running to the spot to prevent the gangsters, they were threatened away waving swords. Shyamaprasad died on the way to the Cooperative Hospital, Kuthuparamba.
