Tamil Nadu: Two get 10 year rigorous imprisonment for smuggling ganja on train
Chennai: The special court for cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act has sentenced two persons to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for smuggling ganja in a train. The court also fined them Rs 2 lakh.
According to special public prosecutor for Narcotic Control Bureau, K Asokh Chakravarthy based on information relating to smuggling of ganja in a train on November 2, 2012, a railway police force team conducted a check at Royapuram railway station, Royapuram railway yard and electrical shed. S Jayakumar, 30, and S Karthick, 20, travelling from Vijayawada to Egmore had alighted from Howrah –Tiruchy express train when it was passing at a slow speed. Immediately, the team chased them and caught them. The team found they were carrying 30 kg of ganja in their bags.
Immediately, RPF team alerted NCB, Chennai. The NCB registered a case against them under NDPS Act and arrested them. Based on their confession the NCB team registered case against C. Prabu, 21 and Selvi of Cumbam.
On completion of trial, I-additional special judge J Chandran said the prosecution proved the case against Jayakumar and Karthick beyond reasonable doubt. The judge sentenced them to undergo RI for ten years and slapped them with a fine of '1 lakh each. The court has acquitted Prabu and Selvi from the case.
