Chennai: Caught, mobile thief slits throat in suicide attempt
Chennai: Tension prevailed after a crime suspect attempted suicide by slitting his throat with a broken bottle when police apprehended him for snatching a mobile phone near Thoraipakkam on Friday night. The suspect was identified as Raji, a 22-year-old from Choolaimedu. Police sources said that he suffered injuries and was admitted to the Government Royapettah Hospital for treatment. Earlier, Raji had snatched a mobile phone from a pedestrian, Micheal (40) of Sai Nagar, in Thoraipakkam, police sources said. Micheal was walking back home along the Thoraipakkam radial road, speaking over the phone when the accused snatched his mobile phone taking him by surprise. When Micheal raised alarms, he flashed a knife at him and fled.
A patrol team, which was in the neighbourhood rushed to Micheal’s aid and chased the robber and caught him. While they were rounding him up, Raji took an empty beer bottle from the roadside and threatened to slit his throat. He suffered minor cuts, police said. A case has been registered and police booked him on charges of robbery.
