Rajahmundry: Car plunges into canal, five of family have miraculous escape

Rajahmundry: Five members of a family including a doctor couple, their son and two adults, had a miraculous escape after their car plunged into a canal at Polavaram in West Godavari on Wednesday. According to Polavaram police, Dr Saikommu Suresh, working as an assistant professor at a private dental college at Bhimavaram, wife Dr Himabindhu, son Aditya, her father Somaiah and her mother Vijayamma were going in the car to visit Papikondalu. Just about 100 metres from their destination, the driver lost control on the car while trying to avoid hitting a vehicle and a buffalo. The vehicle swer-ved into a canal of Kade-mma Outfall Sluice and the car fell into the water.

The passengers started screaming for help. Police personnel on duty near the check post came to their rescue. They were wearing seat belts and the air bags in the car opened avoiding any major injury. The police rescued them and shifted them to safety. They sustained minor injuries under the impact of the fall but the car was badly damaged. The injured were shifted to government hospital at Polavaram for medical treatment and after getting first-aid, the family members went back to their home town. Police booked a case and an investigation is on.
