Guntur: The officials of IIIT Nuzvid have finally taken action against senior students found guilty of ragging juniors on the college campus.

The officials had ordered an enquiry two weeks ago, based on the results of which 54 students were suspended on Monday.

In a press conference held on the college campus, officials said that 24 senior students, who had been identified as the main perpetrators, were being suspended for three semesters, 15 students were being disqualified from attempting the examinations for the current semester, 12 students were being suspended for the sixth semester, and two final-year students were being suspended for the final semester.

Disputes arose between junior and senior students over mic arrangements for the Vinayaka Chavithi celebrations. The seniors developed a grudge against the juniors and subsequently attacked them on the night of August 31. They also attacked faculty members who tried to come to the juniors’ rescue.

When officials tried to take action against the attackers, the senior students staged a protest and disrupted classes for two days.

Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao took serious cognisance of the matter and directed the Vice-Chancellor to take strict action against senior students.
