Karnataka: Machete attack on technical coordinator, five arrested
BENGALURU: The Kudur police arrested five people for attacking a technical coordinator implementing the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) with a machete last Monday.
The accused have been identified as Channakeshava alias Keshav, 27, Manjunatha, 26, both contractors, and their associates, Punith, 21, Lakshman, 31, and Chaamanna, 26, all residents of Kunigal.
Keshav and Manjunatha had threatened technical coordinator H.R. Srinivas, 53, for not clearing inflated bills at Kunigal taluk office on Monday. They later met the other three accused, who are their friends, and sought their support. The five accused waited for Mr Srinivas to leave the office in the evening. While he was heading home at Kalya Gate in Magadi on a two-wheeler, the accused followed him on bikes. At Thalakere in Kudur police limits, the gang attacked him.
The police, who had formed special teams, traced the accused near C.K. Acchukattu Park in Bengaluru and nabbed them on Sunday afternoon. “Their questioning revealed that Lakshman, who was riding pillion on Keshav’s bike, attacked Mr Srinivas with the machete and chopped his hand. The accused confessed that they did it as Mr Srinivas was not clearing their bills,” the police said.
