Chennai: 17-year-old ends life due to harassment

Teacher, HM humiliated' him for failing in exams.

Chennai: Depressed over the alleged humiliation by his teachers at school, a class 11 student committed suicide at his residence in Erukancheri on Thursday. Parents, relatives and friends of the deceased teenager protested outside the school in Perambur on Friday demanding action against teachers for abetting the boy’s suicide. The deceased is identified as P. Sakthivel (17), a resident of Indra Nagar (west) in Erukancheri here. On Thursday evening, his parents found him hanging from the ceiling. Police rushed to the scene and moved the boy to a hospital nearby where he was declared brought dead.

Investigators recovered a suicide note from the boy’s house in which he claimed that humiliation by a teacher and headmaster led to him taking the extreme step. Sakthivel was studying class 11 at a private school in Perambur. Investigations revealed that the boy had not cleared his class 10 board exams in the first attempt. He later wrote the supplementary exams and cleared the board exams and joined class 11, police said.

According to the boy’s relatives, a teacher at the school, Kanagaraj, had allegedly humiliated the boy and the student, in turn, took up the issue with the headmaster Purushothaman, who is also said to have not helped him. “Dejected over this, Sakthivel seems to have taken the extreme step,” a police officer said. As news about Sakthivel’s suicide spread, tension prevailed outside the school in Perambur with the boy’s relatives and a few students staging a road roko demanding action against the teachers. Sembium police personnel held talks with the agitators and pacified them. Kodungayurn police have registered a case in connection with the boy’s death and are probing further.
