Constable's wife accuses inspector of thrashing her husband

She petitioned the City Police Commissioner seeking action into the incident besides requesting protection.

Chennai: In an embarrassing complaint received by the city police, the spouse of a traffic constable attached to the traffic wing of Elephant Gate police station alleged that her husband was brutally attacked by the Sembium police Inspector, on Thursday. Yavana, wife of constable Murugesan, petitioned the City Police Commissioner seeking action into the incident besides requesting protection.

According to her plaint, Murugesan, her husband, who went to drop their 5-year-old son for tuition in Perambur was beaten in full view of the kid and in public view. She claimed that the incident has traumatised her son besides injuring her husband. The petition further prayed for protection for the family. In the meantime, two Whatsapp messages prepared by onlookers about the incident were doing the rounds in message sharing platforms including social networks. One message purportedly composed in favour of Murugesan claimed that the L&O Inspector Ukkirapandi, bundled up the constable in his vehicle and took him to Sembium police station where the latter was reportedly thrashed. The message blamed the Inspector for not just thrashing, but for taking the constable like a suspect in the police vehicle.

The other message claimed that the Inspector who pulled over on suspicion asked Murugesan who he was and the latter did not respond to the questions forcing the Inspector to walk up to him. The constable ridiculed the Inspector who demanded to know who he was. The message further claimed that the constable disobeyed a direct order from the Inspector to reveal which wing he was assigned to and which turned out to be the primary cause for what transpired next. "We are in receipt of her complaint. Though it appears to be exaggerated, we would pursue it based on its merits before deciding the future course of action," said a senior police official.
