Kozhikode: Entrepreneur commits suicide

Inordinate delay alleged in Kannur function hall permit.

KOZHIKODE: A Non-Resident Keralite businessman ended his life here on Tuesday due to the ‘cruelties’ meted out to him by the municipal authorities. The body of Sajan Parayil, 49, managing director of Pardha Builders, was found hanging from the roof of his house at Arembam, Kottali, on Tuesday morning.

He had constructed a Rs 15-crore auditorium project ‘Pardha Convention Centre’ at Bekkalam near here four months ago. The town planning office had given it clearance but the Anthoor municipality ruled by the CPM denied it licence.

Though the municipality had directed Sajan to demolish the building when the construction was midway, he had approached the CPM Kannur district committee for help. The committee directed the municipality to conduct an inquiry by the officials. Later an inquiry by the town planning office found the project in tune with rules and regulations.

A businessman based in Nigeria for almost 20 years, Sajan had approached the municipality countless times, but the officials denied him licence citing flimsy reasons, alleged his relatives. For the last four months he had been running from pillar to post to get it clearance. The kith and kin of the businessman are planning to organise a sit-in in front of the municipal office with his body .

However, municipal officials who preferred anonymity told Deccan Chronicle that they had not denied it licence but only pointed out necessary restructuring at certain spots in the project.
