Bengaluru: Murder accused attacks cops
Bengaluru: A murder case accused was shot at and nabbed by the police after he attacked the policemen when they tried to catch him. The incident was reported near Tulips Resort off Bannerghatta Road on the city outskirts early Sunday morning.
The accused Manjunath alias Mental Manja, aged around 30 years, is undergoing treatment at a hospital and is said to be out of danger. On Saturday evening, he had allegedly murdered his neighbour, Muniraju, 24, after he had warned the accused to stay away from his sister-in-law. Both were residents of Chinthalamadivala village in Sarjapur.
Manjunath is married and works as a tempo driver. He was allegedly eve-teasing women in the village. The deceased, Muniraju, also a tempo driver, was living with his brother, sister-in-law and her brother in a house behind Manjunath’s house.
On Thursday, Manjunath had allegedly misbehaved with Muniraju’s sister-in-law. So the family members had contacted Manjunath over the phone and had called him to talk about the matter.
Muniraju also warned him to stay away from his sister-in-law. The issue was also brought to the notice of some leaders in the village and they had also warned Manjunath to mend his ways. He thought that Muniraju had told the elders about the incident.
“On Friday midnight, he had left the village along with his wife and brother. On Saturday evening around 4 pm, Manjunath and his brother Santosh attacked Muniraju near Tirumala petrol bunk at Bommasandra Circle and hacked him to death with a machete. A case was registered in Hebbagodi police station in this connection,” the police said.
Early on Sunday morning, the police team received credible information that Manjanath was near Tulips resort. Following the information, the police launched a search and found him going on a scooter around 5.30 am. When the police asked him to stop, he allegedly tried to run over a policeman and fell down in the melee.
When the police tried to catch him, he allegedly pulled out a knife and attacked policemen Prasad and Nagaraju and tried to escape. He tried to escape even after Bengaluru Rural DySP S. K. Umesh fired a warning shot. Thus the officer shot at Manjunath and the bullet hit his right thigh. He was immediately rushed to a hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.
The Hebbagodi police have registered a case in connection with the murder, while Bannerghatta police have registered a case in connection with the firing incident.
