Kerala rape and murder case: Court nod to accused's identification parade

To be held at Kakkanad jail where accused is lodged

Kochi: The Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on Saturday permitted the police to subject Ameerul Islam, the suspect in the Jisha murder case, to the test identification parade. The court also asked Shibu Daniel, Judicial First Class Magistrate, Kunnumpuram, to oversee the identification parade.

Ernakulam Rural SP P.N. Unnirajan filed an application before the Ernakulam CJM court and Chief Judicial Magistrate S. Aji Kumar passed the order. Prior to filing the application, the top cop held discussion with the magistrate in the chamber.

The identification parade would be held at Kakkanad jail itself where he is lodged at present. The time for conducting the identification parade would be fixed as per the convenience of the magistrate. It is learnt that the cops would complete the identification parade as soon as possible so that they can move Perumbavur Judicial First Class Magistrate seeking the custody of the accused.

The police also recorded the statements of two of Ameerul's colleagues and friends, Sujal and Munarul Jamal. They were staying with Ameerul till he left Kerala. The two identified the slippers worn by Ameerul and found by the cops near Jisha's house. A team led by SI Gopakumar on Saturday reached Assam to question Ameerul's relatives and to seek more evidence in the case.

Meanwhile, reports emerged that Mr Lipton Das, who translated the words of Ameerul during police questioning, made a revelation that Jisha's mother Rajeswari was aware of the dispute between Ameerul and Jisha. He added that Jisha's mother also had slapped Ameerul on one occasion.

Police to seek motive afresh

Though the cops probing the Jisha murder case submitted before the court that accused Ameerul Islam’s motive was sexual abuse of the victim, the Special Investigation Team has not ruled out other motives and would probe various angles, including whether they had arguments at any previous occasions too.
This, after accused Ameerul Islam, 23, gave different versions during his interrogation on the two days before he was produced before the court on Friday.

The cops are also not ready to buy the “humiliation” angle as told by the victim initially. Then he had told the police that he got offended by the victim making fun of him when he was slapped by a woman bathing in the canal ghat near her house on the day before the crime. He had said that he killed Jisha in an inebriated state and had carried only a knife with him.

However, he later told cops that he was not drunk too much and that he reached her house at Vattolipaddi Canal Road carrying over two weapons with the intention of murdering her. Among the things to be probed will be the role of another person in the crime. The nature of relationship that the woman possibly had with her suspected killer too continues to baffle the police. Earlier, a police team went to Shinkidivakat in Kancheepuram and recorded the statement of the company where Ameerul worked in a fake name.
