Tamil Nadu: Couple loses over Rs 22 lakh in bid to buy gold cheap
TIRUCHY: The city police are on the lookout for some miscreants who allegedly cheated a couple of Rs 22.60 lakh at Tiruchy airport on Wednesday night, with a false promise of getting ‘gold biscuits’ seized by the Customs department at a cheaper rate.
Police said a group of brokers at the airport approached one Anbalagan of Coimbatore and one Balaji of Chennai and told them that the Customs department at Tiruchy airport planned to dispose off '35 lakh gold biscuits seized by them for Rs 22 lakh, with the help of their friends and some others known to them in the Air customs.
Believing their words, Anbalagan and his wife Latha and the jewelry appraiser Balaji of Chennai approached the brokers-gang last night, when they allegedly introduced one Karthikeyan to them as Customs department staff.
After receiving Rs 22.60 lakh from them, the miscreants told them that they would remit the amount to the Customs department.
Assuring the couple and their friend that the gold biscuits would reach them shortly, the miscreants took them outside the airport in a car.
There the gang members forcibly alighted them from the car and after snatching their mobile phones, had escaped from the scene in the same car, said police. Based on Anbazagan’s complaint, airport police registered a case and are investigating.
