SALEM: The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption (DVAC) personnel arrested a police inspector attached to Nambiyur police station in Erode district for demanding a bribe of Rs 2 lakh to avoid registering a complaint.
Police said that T Sekar, 50, a realtor from Nambiyur quarrelled with his tenant Muthuramalingam on April 20. The latter filed a complaint with Nambiyur police against Sekar, his wife Padmavathy, 45, and their son, aged 16.
Police sources said that Sekar approached Nambiyur police inspector R Vivekanandan who asked him to pay Rs 2 lakh to avoid registering a complaint against the minor boy. Initially Sekar agreed to give Rs 1 lakh and the inspector accepted an advance of Rs 50,000, police said.
Meanwhile, after a change of mind, Sekar tipped off the DVAC. A DVAC team led by DSP S Pushparaj laid a trap by asking Sekar to give chemical-laced notes to the inspector at the station. Immediately, they went into the police station and seized the chemical-laced currency notes. The inspector was arrested and produced in a court in Erode and remanded to custody.
