Kochi: Mother arrested for boy\'s torture

The couple arrived here over a month ago and the man was working as a driver with a private institution.

Kochi: A day after a three-year-old boy was admitted to a hospital in Aluva with serious head injury, the police on Thursday arrested his mother and slapped attempt to murder charges against her.

Meanwhile, the boy's condition remained critical even after undergoing a surgery for fixing internal bleeding and several clots on his brain at the hospital.

Earlier, Eloor police recorded the arrest of the 28-year-old native of Jharkhand after she admitted to have tortured the child several times by inflicting burns for "disobeying" her.

"We've slapped charges including 'Attempt to Murder' (Sec 307 IPC) and 'Cruelty to child' under relevant provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act. This after we've recorded the statement of both the boy's mother and father. The role of the father is still being probed and his arrest yet to be recorded," said a senior police official.

The couple, throughout the interrogation, maintained the boy suffered the head injury after he fell from a concrete slab in the kitchen of their rented house in Eloor and that they immediately rushed him to the hospital on Wednesday evening.

"Her statement is not consistent. We booked her after she admitted to have physically tortured him by inflicting burn injuries. We're verifying the veracity of their claims of the boy falling from the concrete slab," they said.

The couple arrived here over a month ago and the man was working as a driver with a private institution. The cops are in touch with Jharkhand police to unearth further information such as their relationship. Meanwhile, the boy's health condition remained critical and is on ventilator support despite doctors performing a neurosurgery late on Wednesday.

"He suffered severe injury on right side of his brain. We managed to stop active internal bleeding and remove several blood clots. However his condition remains critical and anything can be said only after 48 hours observation," doctors at the Rajagiri Hospital said.

"On arrival the child was gasping for breath and unconscious… On extensive examination, it was found he had multiple bruises on both lower limbs, fresh burn on his right sole and old burn wounds on both his buttocks.

After stabilisation, an emergency CT scan of the whole body was done. CT brain revealed intracranial bleeding. Since the history provided by the father was not consistent with the injuries, police and Childline, were intimated," a Medical bulletin read.
