Hyderabad: Gandhi hospital's fake doctor steals 40 gram gold

The suspect, pretending to be a doctor, took the patient to a nearby empty ward and even administered a blank injection. A probe is now on.

Hyderabad: A thief sporting a stethoscope allegedly stole a 40-gram gold chain from a patient inside Gandhi hospital on Friday night. The suspect asked the 35-year-old patient to remove her chain after he took her for an injection to the gynaecology ward.

After the injection, the fake doctor asked the patient to close her eyes and told her to “try sleeping”. Cops believe it’s then that he snatched the chain and fled. Authorities are now reviewing CCTV to identify the suspect.

Unfortunately, the cameras at Gandhi hospital don’t record in high definition and are useless after sunset because of a lack of night vision capabilities.
Cops said the incident occurred between 8pm and 9pm when there are almost no doctors in the gynaecology ward.

Victim V. Ramadevi, a resident of Maula Ali, said the suspect was neatly dressed and had walked towards her “with confidence”. She said he was carrying a stethoscope in his hand.

“He told her he was the duty doctor and said she was due for an injection. He then asked her to follow him to the adjacent ward, which was empty. The victim was convinced and she followed him,” a senior police official said.

Authorities said the injection fired a blank. “He injected only the needle and then asked the victim to relax. But before that, he asked the woman to remove her gold chain. And when she had her eyes closed, the suspect fled with jewellery,” the police official said.

The victim’s husband was out buying food. A lack of proper security cover at Gandhi Hospital has remained a point of concern for several years now. The hospital has also witnessed thefts of newborns and despite promises made by officials, the CCTV system is yet to be upgraded to high definition.
