Hyderabad: 5 to serve 2 years for dowry harassment

The court sentenced the convicts to two years of imprisonment and directed them to pay a penalty of Rs 11,000 each.

Hyderabad: Five members of a family were convicted in a case of dowry harassment and domestic violence by the 22nd Metropolitan Magistrate court at Ibrahimpatnam on Friday. The court sentenced the convicts to two years of imprisonment and directed them to pay a penalty of Rs 11,000 each.

In 2016, a case was registered at the Yacharam police station following a complaint by one T. Sunitha against her husband, in-laws and relatives, alleging dowry harassment and domestic violence.

Police booked a case against T. Srinivas Reddy, a resident of Nandivanaparthy in Yacharam, his mother Bharathi, father Pandu, sister Sukanya and her husband K. Vijay.

Ms Sunitha complained that though her parents gave Rs 10 lakh cash, 14 tola gold and a two-wheeler as dowry, her husband’s family harassed her for an additional Rs 2 lakh and 10 tola gold, beat her and kicked her out of the house.
