Chennai: Speeding biker booked after pillion rider dies

Police said the duo were drunk and were not wearing helmets.

Chennai: A college student riding pillion with his friend died after the two-wheeler they were riding rammed into centre median on East Coast Road on Thursday.

According to sources, Dinakaran (19), a resident of Neelankarai, pursuing second-year B.Com in a private college was on a two-wheeler ride with his friend Prasanth (19) who recently had dropped out of college.

Police said the duo were drunk and were not wearing helmets.

“While Prasanth was riding the motorbike, Dinakaran was riding pillion. On Thursday night, when they were at Vettuvankeni junction on ECR, Prasanth lost control of the bike and rammed into the median,” said a police officer.

The duo were thrown off the bike. While Prasanth sustained minor injuries on his hands and legs, Dinakaran sustained a head injury and died on the spot.

The Adyar Traffic investigation police registered a case and took the body to Royapettah Government hospital for postmortem.

The police said the duo were under the influence of alcohol and that they have booked Prasanth for rash driving and drunk driving.
