Kochi: Cops booked for assault
Kochi: A case has been lodged against former Panangad sub-inspector Prajeesh Sasi and three other police personnel for allegedly assaulting an autodriver after taking him into custody in connection with a theft at the Maradu market a month ago.
“A case was lodged against the SI, a civil police officer and two other constables, identified by the victim, at the Panangad police station following his complaint. The charges include section 323 and 324 IPC (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt using dangerous weapons). The SI was also been shifted to the Control Room to facilitate inquiry,” said Siby Tom, Circle Inspector (South).
The action comes even as K.K. Naseer (38), the autorickshaw driver hailing from Netoor, and his family were staging a sit-in protest before the Trikkakara Assistant Police Commissioner office since Tuesday.
The alleged incident happened on December 23 when Panangad police took him into custody for questioning in connection with the theft of nearly Rs 1 lakh from a shop in the Maradu International Market. The cops while inspecting CCTV images found him having similarities to one of the two persons caught in the camera. He was allegedly subjected to physical torture while being interrogated.
However, he was released soon following protest and the cops failing to get any solid evidence. Nasser had then underwent treatment at the Tripunithura Taluk hospital and later at Ernakulam General Hospital where the doctors reportedly told him that he had suffered internal injuries.
