Telangana: Flier held with Rs 57 lakh in forex
Hyderabad: Sleuths from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence nabbed an air passenger who was trying to smuggle Rs 57 lakh in Saudi riyals and UAE dirhams abroad. A DRI official said based on a tip off they intercepted the passenger late on Wednesday night. He had cleared emigration and other checks and was proceeding to board an Emirates flight bound to Dubai. On verification, he was found for be carrying foreign currency, which he did not disclose before the clearance.
“On examination of his baggage, foreign currency in the form of UAE dirhams, Saudi riyals and Omani riyals was found bundled among newspapers. “The value of the currency is about '57 lakh. The passenger on interrogation stated that the currency was obtained from unauthorised dealers and did not belong to him. It was being carried to Dubai at the behest of a private person,” a DRI official said.
