Cops rewarded for nabbing chain-snatchers in 20 mins

HYDERABAD: City police commissioner C.V. Anand on Monday rewarded three Jubilee Hills police officers with cash and appreciation certificates for apprehending two persons barely 20 minutes after they had snatched a chain on April 14.

Detective Inspector B. Srinivas, one of the three to be rewarded, said that he had got a call from the victim, T. Venkatesh, at 11.55 pm that unidentified persons had snatched his one-tola gold chain.

He went to the place, Gayatri Hills, with sub-inspector N. Narsinga Rao and home guard P. Suresh and took the description of the suspects. “The only lead we had was that one of the snatchers was wearing a white shirt,” he said.

Srinivas asked the complainant to accompany him. “We checked seven hotels and wine shops in Krishnagar, Yousufguda and Srinagar Colony, but the complainant did not identify anyone.”

“We hardly had time to check CCTV footage. Finally, we rounded up two suspects near a paan shop in Venkatagiri. Venkatesh identified the culprit and during interrogation, the accused also admitted to having snatched the chain,” the inspector said.

Srinivas said that following the arrest, the police searched Venkatagiri on information shared by the accused and by 12:15 am, they arrested the other accused, Ranjit, and his accomplice Shaik Sharfuddin, a tipper driver, and recovered Venkatesh’s chain.
