Karnataka: Woman arrested, ornaments seized

Gold jewels worth Rs 9 lakh were recovered from her.

Bengaluru: The Vidyaranyapura police have arrested a 28-year-old woman, who allegedly befriended neighbours and committed thefts at their houses. Gold jewels worth Rs 9 lakh were recovered from her.

The accused has been identified as Shilpa alias Pavitra, a resident of Vidyaranyapura, hailing from Holenarasipura taluk of Hassan district.According to the police, a complaint was registered in December 2016 by a woman who had stated that 180 grams of gold jewels were stolen from her house when she had gone out with her mother for shopping. As police collected information about the complainant’s neighbours and questioned some of them, including Shilpa, she confessed to the theft. “Shilpa stated that she befriended her neighbours and watched their movements. Whenever she got a chance, she committed theft. With her arrest, two other cases of theft reported in 2013 in Vidyaranayapura station limits were solved. In 2013, she had committed a theft in the relative’s house and she was also questioned. As she was pregnant then, we could not question her in detail. Now, she has confessed to that offence also,” an official said.

41 cases cracked: The North division police have cracked 41 cases of house and vehicle thefts and have arrested 11 persons in this connection. Booty worth Rs 72 lakh, including 1.797 kg gold, 27 two-wheelers and 80 mobile phones have been recovered.
