Hyderabad: Intermediate student beaten by DMart staff dies

Accused of shoplifting, he collapsed after the beating.

Hyderabad: An Intermediate student died after he was allegedly beaten up by the staff of DMart supermarket at Vanasthalipuram in Hyderabad on Sunday night.

His parents said he had been allegedly caught shoplifting by the staff and security of the store. He was allegedly thrashed by the staff severely and collapsed on the spot. He was taken to a nearby hospital but was declared dead by the doctors who examined him.

According to Vanasthalipuram inspector A. Venkataiah, the victim was Lavudya Satish of Nalgonda district who was in second year Intermediate at Chaitanya Junior College, Hayathnagar. He and two friends went to D-Mart on Sunday without informing the college staff or his parents. Satish allegedly stole a chocolate bar from the store and was caught by security as he was leaving. His two friends ran away while he was beaten up by the store’s security personnel. A case has been registered for culpable homicide not amounting to murder (Section 304 part 2 IPC) and SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act.

Satish’s grief-stricken father said that if the boy had stolen a chocolate, the store management should have handed him over to the police or called his parents. “How can they beat my boy to death?” he wailed. “Both Sri Chaitanya and DMart are responsible for my son’s death,” he added.

Friends and relatives of Satish demanded stringent action against the DMart staff. Footage of the boys going into the shop is available but the family says there is no footage of the boys coming out. They are demanding a thorough investigation into the matter and arrest of those who were involved in Satish’s death.

Police has sent the body for post-mortem to the Osmania General Hospital. They are also speaking to the friends who accompanied Satish. DMart staff and security are also being questioned. CCTV footage near and around DMart is being checked for further clues. DMart management could not be reached for comment.
