Hyderabad: 7 arrested for aiding people conduct tests

One of those against whom a case has been registered was running a diagnostic centre at Ibrahimpatnam though he was not authorised to do so.

Hyderabad: Seven doctors from multi-specialty hospitals and diagnostic centres under the jurisdiction of the Rachakonda police commissionerate have been arrested in the last six months for performing prenatal sex determination tests on pregnant women and revealing the sex of the child to the parents.

One of those against whom a case has been registered was running a diagnostic centre at Ibrahimpatnam though he was not authorised to do so. He had earlier escaped being caught by a joint operation by the District Medical and Health Office (DHMO) department and the police.

Katta Nanda Kishore, 58, ran the Prathyusha Scanning Centre in a tie-up with another centre registered in the name of his wife who is also a doctor.

“Nanda Kishore, though a certified radiologist, was not allowed to perform scanning. A scanning centre registered in his wife’s name is located a few shops away from where he is carrying out the sex determination tests illegally,” said DMHO (Rangareddy) K.V. Swarajya Lakshmi.

The DMHO said Kishore had managed to escape during an earlier operation. But this time, it was planned perfectly and he was caught red-handed while revealing the gender of the baby to a pregnant woman, who works in the police department.

“These centres do not maintain the data properly, as they are run to do illegal activities. Details of the patients are generally not available and it is hard to trace the status of those who underwent scanning. However, our department generally takes details about pregnant women from hospitals and checks the post-delivery health conditions,” the DHMO Lakshmi said.
