Chennai: 3 held for assaulting woman techie off OMR
Chennai: Police on Saturday arrested three youths, including two teenagers in connection with the assault on a woman software professional, who was waylaid by the armed trio off a deserted stretch near Perumbakkam.
The accused have been identified as Vinayagamoorthy (20) and his accomplices Narayanamoorthy (19) and Logesh (19). All three are residents of Tsunami quarters in Semmenchery.
On Tuesday, they had trailed techie Lavanya (27) after she left office and assaulted her with a weapon and stole her valuables.
According to additional commissioner M.C. Sarangan, seven special teams worked on the case to identify and trace the suspects. “From using technological tools to going through past criminal history, we identified and arrested the three persons,” Sarangan said.
Vinayakamoorthy, according to the senior police officer, was the one who assaulted the woman and is the mastermind of the waylaying. He already has a case of murder against him in Thalambur police limits, according to Sarangan.
Police sources said that in 2016, Vinayakamoorthy had murdered a migrant labourer from Jharkhand to steal his valuables. The murder scene is less than two kilometers away from where Lavanya was attacked last Tuesday.
Lokesh is a petty criminal while Narayanamoorthy was working in near Karapakkam on Rajiv Gandhi Salai. The trio, after commiting crime, had fled to Mahabalipuram and then Puducherry. They were arrested when they returned to Navalur, police sources said. Police recovered the weapons used to attack Lavanya. “Lavanya is out of danger now. We have shared the news of the arrest of her assaulters,” additional commissioner M. C. Sarangan said. The arrested persons were produced before a magistrate and remanded to judicial custody.
