After liquor, Dhoolpet now hotbed for ganja
Hyderabad: After its honeymoon with illegal liquor was over, Dhoolpet has taken up ganja in a major way. In all the recent cases, including students of Nalsar University and BITS Pilani, admitted that they sourced ganja from Dhoolpet.
Due to its inaccessible geographical location, Dhoolpet is proving to be a hard place for the cops to secure entry. “Instead, we have beefed up security at the border to prevent the contraband from reaching the city. Installing more CCTVs at Dhoolpet can also help,” the official added.
Four students, who were arrested by the Rachakonda police last week for chain-snatching, procured ganja from Dhoolpet.
“Special teams conduct raids based on the clues given by the arrested persons. The peddlers are quick and go into hiding. It is difficult to trace them as they are getting enough new recruits,” a senior official said.
For over decades, Dhoolpet has been a major source of illicit liquor and the government declared it free of illegal liquor by providing jobs to the locals. However, with efforts of the police and excise departments, many of them had quit making illegal liquor of which many were women. Though illicit liquor is conspicuous by its absence, ganja peddling is on in Dhoolpet.
