Custodial death: Telangana HC asks for victim’s medical report
HYDERABAD: Justice Bollam Vijaysen Reddy of Telangana High Court on Thursday directed the superintendent of Gandhi Hospital to place the medical reports of B. Bhum Boi, who had allegedly succumbed to physical torture while in police custody.
The judge directed the official to furnish all the details right from the condition of Boi when he was admitted in Gandhi hospital, if his body had any injuries and whether he was suffering from any ailments.
Justice Reddy was dealing with petitions filed by Boi’s wife and People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) charging that the deceased was beaten up brutally by police officials after he was picked up from a place where some villagers were playing cards in Shantapur village of Bichkunda Mandal in Kamareddy district on November 4. His wife said that Boi had sustained serious injuries on his head following indiscriminate bashing by Bichkunda police. When they found him in an unconscious state, the family took him to Banswada government hospital and later to Nizamabad government hospital. Even when there was no response in a private hospital in Nizamabad, he was shifted to Gandhi Hospital on November 10. He died the next day.
Shashikiran. P, counsel for the petitioner argued that the death was caused by police excesses and an FIR had to be lodged under Sec. 302 against police personnel. However, the police registered a case of suspicious death and there was no further probe into the complaint, he said.
