Delhi: 19-year-old girl hangs self after harassment from in-laws
New Delhi: A 19-year-old girl married to the younger brother of a former music reality show contestant committed suicide by hanging herself at her husband's house in northwest Delhi's Bharat Nagar area after facing harassment from her in-laws who were opposed to the marriage.
The deceased, identified as Shivangi, was married to Vipin Sagar, the younger brother of singer Tarun Sagar for the last two months. The couple were in love and married against the wishes of Vipin's parents, said a senior police officer.
They had a court marriage and Vipin's family hadn't accepted their union. They were staying in a house opposite Vipin's father's house, he said.
Vipin's family would harass Shivangi for dowry and even insult her for marrying him against their wishes. Unable to bear the taunts, the 19-year-old hung herself with her 'dupatta' last night.
Shivangi's parents have alleged that she was physically harassed by her in-laws and husband for dowry and was quite disturbed.
An SDM inquiry is also being carried out in the matter. "A case has been registered under sections 498-A (Husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 304B (Dowry death) IPC against Vipin and his parents at the Bharat Nagar Police Station. Vipin is currently detained and is being interrogated by police," said the officer.
Vipin hails from a family with a musical background. His father Vidhya Sagar and elder brother Tarun peform at 'mata ki chowkis' across the city.
Tarun has also sung a song in the first installment of Akshay Kumar starrer Housefull. He had participated in the 2010 edition of music reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa.
