Tribal woman denied rights to land

The victim, Ooke Divya, mentioned that the society had punished her for marrying a non-Adivasi person, and not paying a penalty of Rs 20,000

Khammam: A woman from the Adivasi community lodged a complaint with the police stating that the tribal welfare society of Ramagovindapuram had expelled her from the community on Monday and had assaulted her.

The victim, Ooke Divya, mentioned that the society had punished her for marrying a non-Adivasi person, and not paying a penalty of Rs 20,000. Besides, the members had also objected to her tilling her land in the village and thrashed her.

“I had married a person who belongs to another community and we had two children. I have two acres of land in the village and came here after my husband’s demise. My son is differently abled and I am living with my mother in the village,” she said.

Divya said that the society members were arguing that the right on the land should go to the male members and the norms of the society would not allow her to claim the land.

“It is unjust on the part of the society to deny rights on our land by saying as I am a woman. I have approached the police for justice,” Divya said.
Sattupalli circle inspector Karunakar said, “We called the elders of tribal society and asked about Divya's complaint. We will extend all sorts of help to her to live in the village peacefully.”
