Karnataka: Broke BSc student robs bar to celebrate birthday

The police gathered information about those who committed similar offences and zeroed in on the gang.

Bengaluru: A gang of eight men, including a BSc Biotechnology student, who committed dacoity at a wine shop to arrange money for a birthday party, has been arrested by the Bagalur police.

The accused have been identified as Sidhanur Raja Srinivasarao alias Raj, 20, a BSc Biotechnology final year student, Manju alias Maxi, 26, both stayed in a room near PES College in Srinagar, Prithviraj, 19, of Ashoknagar in Hanumanthanagar, Vijay, 28, of Surabhi Layout in Yelahanka, Krishnamurthy alias Salam, 25, of Yelahanka, Balaram, 28, of GKVK Layout, Manikantha, 26, of Bagepalli in Chikkaballapura, and Nagaraj alias Kaata, 23, of Devanahalli.

The police said the incident took place at Srinivasa Wines at Gollahalli Gate around 9.45 pm on August 27. The gang had barged inside and assaulted a customer and the cashier. They had threatened the shop employees with lethal weapons, and escaped with Rs12,000 kept in the cashbox. A complaint was registered with the Bagalur police in this connection.

The police gathered information about those who committed similar offences and zeroed in on the gang. When the gang members were picked up and questioned, they confessed to the crime.

“They revealed that Raj had spent all the money his father had sent for college fees. Also, it was his birthday on August 31 and he wanted to celebrate it in a big way but had no money. They decided to commit the dacoity and get the money. First, they planned to attack gambling dens on the outskirts. They went in search of such gambling dens but did not find any. They then targeted the newly opened wine shop and committed the offence,” the police said.
