Kerala: Man loses Rs 49,000 in online fraud

He claimed to have used his ATM card in a few machines in the city a few months back

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In yet another case of online fraud, a man lost around Rs 49,000 after allegedly recharging his DTH connection using a prominent e-commerce website. The victim, Vineeth of Chempazhanthy, who works in a private hospital, recharged his Sun Direct DTH connection using a website, Paytm, on Monday. He had got a special Onam offer and recharged DTH for several months together. On Thursday, he received several messages from his Canara Bank account showing that he had lost Rs 49,166 in eleven transactions.

The medical college police registered a case. “It was found that the money has gone to the account of Noida based e-commerce company itself. The man says he had given his account details and entered OTP he got as message. We are probing it,” a police official said. In another case, an NRI identified as Aravind has given a complaint to Peroorkada police that he lost Rs 52,000 from his Axis Bank account.

He claimed to have used his ATM card in a few machines in the city a few months back. “He called the station on phone and said he lost money. He is yet to email a written complaint. We couldn’t cross check the details with Axis Bank as it’s a closed holiday,” an official attached to Peroorkada police said.
