Kushalnagar tense, tight vigil by Kodagu cops

Poojari had reportedly taken part in a procession organised by Hindu Jagarana Vedike on Sunday night and was stabbed after the event.

Mysuru: Police are maintaining a tight vigil at Kushalnagar in Kodagu district, after the alleged murder of an auto driver on Sunday night, which later took a communal turn.

Kodagu SP Rajendra Prasad camped in Kushalnagar and Section 144 has been clamped till Wednesday. There has been a heavy deployment of police force in the region and all unlawful gatherings have been restricted.

According to the SP, “Praveen Poojari (39), an auto driver, was reportedly stabbed on Sunday night near Gudde Hosur in Kushalnagar rural police station limits. While the exact time of the incident is not clear, it was around 11.45pm when we got the information. Kushalnagar Police have registered a murder case and a special team has been formed to investigate the case,” he said.

After Poojari’s murder, another auto driver Manu, son of Narayan Rao, reportedly stabbed a person from another community in retaliation on Monday evening. The victim has been shifted to Mysuru hospital for treatment and is recovering. Police have arrested Manu and a murder case was registered at Kushalnagar town police station.

Poojari had reportedly taken part in a torchlight procession as part of Akhanda Bharatha Sankalpa Yaathre organised by Hindu Jagarana Vedike on Sunday night and was stabbed after the event. The SP said that Poojari was said to be part of some activities of RSS. but not an active member.

“There is no video proof about his participation in the procession on Sunday night, and there are no eyewitnesses. Further investigation will reveal the truth,” he added. Several pro-Hindu organisations and auto drivers associations staged protest on Tuesday, calling for arrest of the assailant.
