Hyderabad: Depressed over their parents denying permission for their inter-caste marriage, a young couple committed suicide by hanging themselves in a government school at Kukunurpally village in Siddipet district on Wednesday. The bodies were found on Thursday, as locals noticed a foul smell from the government school premises.

According to the Kukunurpally police, the deceased persons were identified as M Kanakaiah, 21, and Tara, 19, who were residents of Lakudaram village. They belonged to different castes and were in love for the last three years.

About three years ago, when the parents of the girl learnt about the relationship between Kanakaiah and Tara, they held a panchayat in the presence of elders of both the communities in the village and warned Kanakaiah to not pursue the girl. His family was also penalised `35,000 in the panchayat, which the family later paid.

However, the couple continued their relationship.

Kukunurpally sub-inspector, Parameshwar said “Kanakaiah and Tara continued keeping in touch even after the panchayat.

Apprehensive that their families would not allow the inter-caste marriage, they seem to have decided to end lives.”
