Varapuzha custodial death: Rights panel wants CBI probe
KOCHI: Kerala State Human Rights Commission has called for a CBI probe into the death of 26-year-old Sreejith in police custody in Varapuzha as the special investigation team probing the case is groping in the dark about the culprits involved in custodial death. P Mohanadas, acting chairman of the commission in an order to the home secretary, has also called for the government to pay '10 lakh as compensation to the family of the dead youth.
The wife of Sreejith should also be given a government job as early as possible, the commission said in its order. The commission has pointed out that Sreejith was the only earning member in the family with a three-year-old daughter and aged parents. The officials responsible for the torture of Sreejith should be brought to the public and removed from the services.
The commission has also said the statement of the rural SP that Sreejith has suffered injuries in the clashes that took place in the residence of Vasudevan is mysterious. How an official in the rank of an SP could reach such a conclusion even before the investigation was completed, the commission asked. The commission has also said that none of the Supreme Court guidelines, that needed to be observed on the event of arresting a person, was observed in the case of Sreejith.
