Chennai: Man gets 10-year rigorous imprisonment for sexually abusing girl
Chennai: The special court for the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act has sentenced a 26-year-old car driver to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 10 years on a charge of sexually abusing a minor girl.
Rosy (15) (name changed) of Velachery, a class 7 drop out, was working in a textile shop in Velachery. When she was 12 years, her family members married her off to a person. As she did not like to live with her husband, she was separated from him by local elders. Since then, she was living with her parents in Velachery and worked in the textile showroom.
A. Purushothaman, 26, was working in a travel company as a car driver near the showroom. After spending several months following her, he developed a friendship with her in 2013. He took her to several places on his two-wheeler and car.
In February 2014, Purushothaman took Rosy to his house when there was no one. In front of a photo of a God, Purushothaman made a promise that he would marry her soon. He had intercourse with her several times.
In November 2014, when she asked him to marry her, he demanded her to give him 25 sovereigns of gold as dowry. Later, he refused to marry her. On a complaint from her, All Women Police, Guindy registered a case against Purushothaman under section 6 of Pocso Act and section 506 (ii) of IPC.
On completion of the trial, special judge, R. Kalaimathi said Purushothaman by promising to marry her created an impression that he would marry her and had ravished her sexually. Hence, Purushothaman committed rape on a minor girl.
While sentencing him to undergo 10 years of RI and imposed him a fine of Rs 5,000 for committing an offence under section 6 of Pocso Act, the special judge acquitted him of the charges of 506 (ii) of IPC. The special judge directed the state government to release a solatium of Rs 1 lakh to the girl from Victims Compensation Fund as per section 7 (4) of Pocso Act.
