Chennai: A 26-year-old CPI (M) worker was brutally murdered by a quintet on Tuesday night at Sathya Moorthy Nagar, in Triplicane, while two sibling of the deceased and his friend sustained injuries. The victim identified as D. Mugilan was working in a drug store in Adam Market besides being active party worker spearheading the drive to cleanse Triplicane of the sale of contraband including ganja.

On Tuesday evening, Mugilan was roughed up and thrashed by a gang led by Rakesh and his aides. Late into night, Mugilan along with his elder brother Silambarasan and friend Narasimhan, went for a meeting with Rakesh and his four friends on Madha Koil Street in Gandhi Nagar of Sathya Moorthy Nagar.
As altercations reached a crescendo, Rakesh pulled out a pen knife and stabbed Mugilan in his neck while Silambarasan and Narasimhan were also targeted by Rakesh’s men. Mugilan died on the spot.

The body was moved to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for a post-mortem. Soon after the incident, Triplicane police managed to pick up three – Rakesh, Velu, and Dhayanidhi, and the trio was being remanded to judicial custody.

CPI(M) North Chennai district secretary L. Sundarrajan condemned the murder which was planned by ‘Aruppulakshmi’ aka Nagalakshmi, who was running a ganja racket among other illegal trades including liquor sale after Tasmac hours.

“CPI(M) and DYFI had made umpteen number of representations to Triplicane Police seeking to intervene. However, no action was taken. Mugilan was among those who led the movement to cleanse the locality”, said Sundarrajan.
He wanted the cops too to be booked for being party to the crime by their inaction over the complaints against the racket.
