Bengaluru: Man arrested for assaulting police

Praneeth didn't listen to the cops on duty and got into an altercation with them, says Police officer.

Bengaluru: A 31-year-old man was arrested by Mahadevpura police early Wednesday after he allegedly assaulted an assistant commissioner of police traffic on duty and tore his uniform.

The accused, identified as Praneeth, a resident of Kadugodi, has been booked under Sections 353 (obstructing a public servant while discharging his duty), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of IPC.

The incident took place around 12 midnight near Doddanekundi on the Outer Ring Road. Investigations revealed that due to sudden downpour on Tuesday night, which had caused waterlogging in various parts of the city, a team from east traffic division was manning the traffic at Kadubesanhalli, where a massive traffic jam was reported around 10.30 pm and traffic was held up till K.R. Puram.

While the cops were trying to restore vehicular movement, Praneeth who was in his car, got into the wrong side and tried to take a U-turn where the traffic was already chaotic, police said.

“Our constables stopped him twice for taking a wrong way and didn’t let him take the U-turn. But, Praneeth didn’t listen to the cops on duty and got into an altercation with them. When I noticed the commotion and approached the accused and asked him to take the vehicle back, he began abusing me. When we tried to seize his bike, he held my collar and tore my uniform. He snatched and threw away my name plate. Mahadevpura police was immediately informed and later around 1.30 am, after clearing the traffic chaos, I filed a complaint against Praneeth in the law and order station. He was arrested and produced in the court on Wednesday,” said a senior police officer. Mahadevpura police have registered a case.
