Odisha police plans to curb crimes by students
BHUBANESWAR: Odisha police on Tuesday decided to act tough against students committing crimes to ensure educational institutions remain a ‘crime free’ zone in the state. According to sources, students are found involved in criminal acts like rape, murder, assault, eve-teasing and drug abuse. Taking stern note of the situation, Odisha director general of police (DGP) Rajendra Prasad Sharma directed supe-rintendents of police, deputy commissioners of police (DCPs), Cuttack, Bhubane-swar and the SP Economic Offence Wing (EOW) to undertake special measures and drives to curb such crimes.
An advisory for authorities at educational institutions, police and parents has been issued by Odisha police to ensure that students do not indulge in illegal activities within and outside the campuses. Senior officials at police stations have been asked to inte-nsify patrolling, deploy adeq-uate staff to put a check on entry of outsiders and anti-so-cials inside campuses and to conduct orientation progra-mme on crime-related issues.
The cops have been asked to sensitise students about legal consequences of taking law into their hands and its impact on academic and professional career.
College authorities, on the other hand, have been asked to keep senior officials informed about any law and order situation and crimes happening in their educational institutions. The college management should create a database of all students; install adequate CCTV cameras across camp-us, undertake counselling sessions and hold meetings with parents at regular intervals. Besides, stress will be laid on creating a student-friendly environment so that they can easily report incidents in their respective campuses.
