Hyderabad: A 20-year-old ‘vish’ caller from Jharkhand who cheated a car driver posing to be a bank manager was arrested by Rachakonda cyber crime police. Binod Mandal learned the technique from friends in his village, police said.

Karthik Raj, a car driver, filed a complaint with Rachakonda cyber crime police, alleging that an unknown person who identified himself as a manager working for the State Bank of Hyderabad Debit Cards Division had called him, and had asked him to reveal details of his debit card, CVV number, PIN number and OTP, saying that his account had to be upgraded.

But after Karthik gave the details, he got messages that money was debited from his account for online purchases. When he called back the 'manager', he was told that it was part of the upgradation process and the debited amount will be refunded. Later, when he contacted the bank, he found Rs 47,500 was missing from his account.

Police registered a case and found that the money was transferred to e-wallets like PayTM, SBI Buddy and ICICI Pocket, and then transferred to bank accounts from the e-wallets. Police traced the suspect Binod Mandal to Asansol in West Bengal, and a team under the guise of making a better deal trapped him in a decoy operation near the Asansol railway station.

Police found from Binod had learnt the techniques from his friends in his village in Jharkhand, who are into such frauds. He also admitted to the police that there were hundreds of youths in his village and surrounding villages who are into this type cheating as a profession and have robbed innumerable victims.
