Chennai: Police vehicle runs amok, kills three

Three persons including an 11-year-old boy were killed after being hit by a police vehicle near Kalpakkam.

Chennai: Three persons including an 11-year-old boy were killed after being hit by a police vehicle near Kalpakkam, 50 kms from the city, on Friday evening.
The police vehicle was returning to its Kancheepuram headquarters after completing its run as ‘a pilot’ for Governor Purohit’s convoy when the mishap happended, according to a statement from Kancheepuram district police.

The Governor was returning from Cuddalore to attend an inaugural event at a city hotel. The Governor had left for Cuddalore by train on Thursday and after review meetings and events there, he left by road at around 2 15 pm. A statement from Raj Bhavan read, “The Governor's convoy reached Raj Bhavan by 4.20 pm. There was no occurrence of any mishap or accident in the movement of the Governor convoy from Cuddalore to Chennai”.

While the convoy was returning to the city, a police escort vehicle (TN 21 G 2839) from Kancheepuram police had accompanied them until Kovalam and was returning to the district police headquarters when the accident happened, according to Kancheepuram police. The vehicle was travelling along the Thiruporur-Perur road when it hit a two-wheeler near Pudhu Kalpakkam. Two persons on the bike including an eleven year old were thrown to the ground. After hitting the two-wheeler, the vehicle ran amok and hit an elderly lady standing by the road.

Mamallapuram police rushed to the scene and picked up the three persons who were hit by the vehicle. They were identified as M Suresh (30), N Karthikeyan (10), both from Thiruporur and K Kausalya (75) of Pudhu Kalpakkam. “Suresh and Karthikeyan were killed on the spot while Kausalya was struggling for life”, a police officer said.

Police moved the woman to the Rajiv Gandhi Govenrment General Hospital for further treatment where she was declared brought dead.The bodies were then moved to the government hospital for autopsy. Traffic was affected on ECR for over an hour following the accident. Mamallapuram police have registered a case and are investigating.
