Rs 75 lakh worth gutka seized in Coimbatore

The duo in the auto gave irrelevant statements as police questioned them.

COIMBATORE: Around Rs 75 lakh worth banned gutka products were seized from a godown here and two north Indian men were taken to custody.

According to police, during a routine vehicle check late on Thursday night near Saravanampatty in the city’s suburbs, police under suspicion stopped a load auto carrying a huge load of gunny bags.

The duo in the auto gave irrelevant statements as police questioned them. On suspicion, cops opened the bundles and found banned gutka products inside.

They were taken in custody.

Police identified them as Desaram (42), staying at Selvapuram, and Mothi Lal (38).

The accused were allegedly supplying gutka products to petty shops across the city and neighbouring towns including Tirupur, Erode, and Kerala.

On receiving vital information from the duo, police launched a search at a rented private godown of the duo near Karumathampatti - Mopripalayam, on the city's outskirts. Police were shocked to find bundles of gutka products in the godown all worth Rs 75 lakh. Investigations are on.
