Couple loses gold chain to conman in Chennai

They had arrived at the city on Thursday morning to attend the wedding of a relative.

Chennai: A couple from Thiruvannamalai lost a gold chain to a trickster in Perungalathur bus stand on Thursday evening. The victims were identified as Krishna and his wife.

They had arrived at the city on Thursday morning to attend the wedding of a relative. After the wedding, when the couple was waiting at the Perungalathur bus stop, a man approached them and told them he had 20 sovereigns of gold jewellery of foreign origin.

The con man spun a tale that he had bought 50 sovereigns jewels from Malaysia to sell in the city and that he had managed to sell 30 sovereigns already. He asked the couple to buy the remaining 20 sovereigns. Believing him, the couple gave him their gold chain and bought the “foreign” gold in return.

Krishna went to a pawn shop in the area to check the purity and genuineness and to his shock found out the metal was not gold at all. The man had tricked them with fake jewellery.

The Peerkankaranai police have launched a search for the con man.
